Collective memories define our territory
MNEMONICS is Romania’s participation at The International Architecture Exhibition in Venice – La Biennale Architettura 2018. It is an interactive exhibition addressing the connection between people and the urban public space, between childhood memories and the space between the buildings.
Following La Biennale di Venezia, MNEMONICS exhibits a possible version of free space in Romanian cities in an optimistic manner – a different kind of heritage, a territory of freedom well known by so many generations of people. The project addresses the way the free space between the buildings evolved during the past few decades, and the games, the carpet hanger, the merry-go-round, the swings, the ping-pong table and the staircase hallway remain symbols of every memory created in this decorum.
The international press called it „the unofficial playground” of La Biennale. MNEMONICS is about to reach Romania now in a newly redesigned and enriched version.
The project was conceived and developed by a multidisciplinary team of 4 architects, 1 art director and 1 copywriter, and it eventually grew to be a discussion with various professionals and several civic groups believing in the importance of improving public space through knowledge and involvement.
